What was it?
Unique Magazine’s mag shop re-opening event.
Why it mattered to me?
I am obsessed with all things editorial design and collecting magazines. Plus it’s an inspiring creative local North East business.
My takeaway:
Beautiful curation of Art, Design, Fashion, Photography, Sport, Travel and independent magazines. It feels like a bit of a hidden gem in Gateshead. Unique Magazines stock some really hard to come by indie and local zines all in one place. There is a selection of high end well known luxurious fashion magazines from across the world and some more experimental print. It is so inspiring to look through all the publications and experience the scale & understand the printing processes, paper choices and flick through the physical pages – the best way to buy magazines. The experimental publishing and range of niche mags is incredible some of which I had never seen in person before, it was pretty hard to pick which one to buy.
Some of my faves stocked at Unique Magazines are: Boys! Boys! Boys!, Serviette, Paperboy, The Face Magazine, MARFA, Vogue Italia, Real Review, The Gentlewoman, It’s Freezing in LA, Archivo and Sandwich magazine.
I picked up the latest issue of Modern Matter magazine – I am a big fan of Olu Odukoya’s creative concepts and art direction. The 2025 Spring/Summer issue once again was a delightful conceptual printed piece of art and added to my collection of the previous issues. With 3 different sizes of magazine (small, medium and large) tied together this issue and concept underpinned and answered the question ‘Does size matter?’. I absolutely loooooove it & when I see an issue of Modern Matter I always buy it because they feel pretty rare!
