My visit: August 2022. Cost: Free !
What was it?
Morag Myerscough’s temporary colourful installation commissioned by English Heritage situated along Hadrian’s Wall near Hexham. It was exciting to see the colourful structure appear as you walked up the hill, it was also important that this was a site-specific piece that celebrated the North East’s history.
Why it mattered?
It was a beautiful way to experience contemporary art in the fresh countryside air and in such a meaningful and historic location. Also it was somewhere local and beautiful that I wouldn’t normally go to! Usually I see Morag’s installations in London or down south so this was exciting that it was in the North East!
My takeaway:
Poetic and historical, physically being and experiencing the view that had been used and seen 1900 years ago at Hadrian’s Wall was a powerful way to experience this piece.
Vibe:
Vibrant contemporary colours contrasted with the earthy landscape and the fort ruins of Northumberland. Bold type and patterns created by the community in the local area were brought together create a dreamlike fort.
