Farrell Centre

My visit: July 2025.
Cost: Free !

What was it?

The Farrell Centre part of the Newcastle University campus.

Why it mattered to me:

I have admired the locally focused work that the Farrell Centre researches and exhibits for some time. The ‘What is an ideal city?’ was such a positive interactive exhibition which felt conversational around Newcastle and what makes it an exciting and creative place to live. Whilst I was there I also saw the ‘Keep off the grass’ exhibition which looked at signs and the negative shouty energy of signs in public places. I loved considering the signs as graphic symbols and the vociferous sometimes unnecessary and over bearing energy they hold & how we can make them positive and welcoming.

My takeaway:

The mix of the contemporary design of the Farrell Centre gallery with the original features of the listed building was beautiful to experience. As you walk up into the gallery space you can see  the original fireplaces when you go up the stairs and get a cross section of the restored building. I felt a strong sense of place with the 3D model map of the city and it brought back memories of old buildings and familiar places. Similar to the restoration of the building, I feel Farrell Centre encompasses this celebration of the past and present through buildings, spaces and experiences.

Vibe:

Uplifting and collaborative, the space really feels like it’s creating a community and discussion in and around Newcastle. The open, transparent architecture and the views across the city also reflect that sense of connection. I have booked onto the Concrete Dreams talk about Newcastle’s Modernist architectural history – looking forward to it!
